Couples Therapy

My approach to couples therapy draws on the research and techniques developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, a mode of therapy backed by decades of research. The Gottman approach has been revolutionary in the field of couples therapy, dispelling many myths about what is and isn’t helpful when working with couples to overcome problems and move towards better communication, understanding, friendship, and intimacy. I can help you identify areas of strength in and opportunities to improve your relationship, and to develop a personalized treatment plan for you and your partner to have a strong and healthy companionship.

Here is what you can expect if you decide to see me as your couples therapist:

In our first session, you’ll tell me the story of how you met each other, how you became a couple, and what’s happened since then to end up where you are now. At the end of this session I’ll send you home with your first assignment: a questionnaire that you and your partner will complete separately and submit for electronic scoring, that will give me a good idea of the strengths and weak points in your relationship.

During our second session, each of you and I will meet individually. This will give us the opportunity to consider your individual histories that shaped your life prior to becoming a couple.

By the time we have our third session I will have assessed my notes from the prior two sessions, combined with the results of your questionnaire assessment, to create a roadmap tailored to your specific needs as a couple. This will give us a clear direction for the remainder of our future sessions together. Investing the time early on in therapy to do a thorough assessment will help us to make efficient use of our time in all subsequent sessions.

I aim to provide a nonjudgmental, LGBTQA-friendly environment where you can express your frustrations, fears, and dreams; and where you define your success. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. You are a unique individual; so therapy should be tailored to your unique experience, not the other way around.

My style of therapy emphasizes your value and agency as a person, and how you ultimately have the ability to overcome any obstacle you’ve run into. As your therapist, I can help you determine how you want to live your life, and the path you’ll follow to get there.
